The transgendered man who generated a huge controversy after his first pregnancy last year has given birth again, this time to a baby boy.
Thomas Beatie, a legally defined ‘man’, kept his original female reproductive organs while undergoing breast reduction and hormone therapy in order to one day conceive a child.
After he discovered that his wife, Nancy, was unable to conceive a child he decided to stop his hormone treatments and pursue the route of artificial insemination, giving birth to daughter Susan last July.
“I am transgender, legally male, and legally married to Nancy. Unlike those in same-sex marriages, domestic partnerships, or civil unions, Nancy and I are afforded the more than 1,100 federal rights of marriage,” Beatie said in a letter to Advocate.com last year.
“Sterilisation is not a requirement for sex reassignment, so I decided to have chest reconstruction and testosterone therapy but kept my reproductive rights. Wanting to have a biological child is neither a male nor female desire, but a human desire.”
