PET ADVERTORIAL: FLEA & SKIN SOLUTIONS

Advertorial

We are well into the end of Summer but we’re still experiencing some extreme temperatures. Whilst this may be a very exciting and outdoorsy season, it can be traumatic for our companion animals. It’s in these conditions when our pets become vulnerable to fleas. They are also exposed to a variety of allergens and may struggle with skin allergies and skin irritation.

This is often because we spend a lot more time outdoors with them and are exposed to the elements. Whether it be swimming in the sea or walking in the park, our pet’s immunity and resilience is definitely challenged.

Probably the biggest mistake we make is to seek a miracle solution to sorting out a flea problem by applying harsh and dangerous chemicals and poisons onto our pets. This, despite the fact that natural, safe and effective remedies do exist.

We also tend to bath our pets more often in summer and soap them down after returning from the sea or a walk. Some pet owners do this daily and use hard chemical shampoos and soaps that strip the natural and defensive bacteria of the skin, making our pets even more vulnerable to fleas and allergens.

Rather than shampooing and dipping your pets in chemicals, I suggest that you prepare a “natural skin dip” for your pets, which you can use a few times a week, if not daily. This natural bath is more appropriate for dogs but certain cats also do not mind being bathed. You could also spray this solution onto your cat or dog if you prefer.

Natural Skin Dip For Pets

  • Prepare a basin of Rooibos tea using 5 – 8 tea bags

  • Add half a cup of apple cider vinegar to stop scratching
  • Add a half a cup of Vondis khakibos spray for fleas and ticks
  • Add a few bunches of fresh rosemary – optional
  • Add a few squirts of Vondis buchu moisturising oil for dry skin – optional

Once the water has cooled and you have removed the tea bags and rosemary, submerge your dog and hold him in this soothing water for 8 -10 minutes. This will also help to drown the fleas.

You can do this a few times a week, if necessary.

Large Breeds: if you are unable to soak your large dog, then simply spray this solution onto the coat.

External Treatment for sensitive or irritated skin: The pulp/juice of fresh bulbinella or aloe vera (or ferox) should be applied regularly onto the affected and sensitive areas of the skin. Vondis rooibos anti-itch solution can also be administered internally and externally.

It is also important to boost your pet’s immunity during this season. The use of probiotics and/or spirulina is advised. Also, good quality omega 3 fish oil (not flax) is essential.

A natural diet with vegetables and loads of cooling herbs like mints, sage and lemon balm will also help to build immunity and calm and cool irritable skin.

While it is always tempting to use strong chemicals and poison to kill fleas and ticks and to treat skin conditions and allergies, these products are also absorbed into the tissues and organs of the animal, accumulating over time, with a consequent impact on the well-being of the pet.

This natural skin dip will serve you well.
