Walmart, the largest retailer and employer in the US, has been praised for adding protections for its transgender workers in its employment non-discrimination policy.

The new policy now covers employees’ gender identity and gender expression.

The company’s non-discrimination policy already included sexual orientation.

According to Walmart, the changes have been in effect for a number of weeks.

“What matters in the workplace is how you do your job, not your gender identity or sexual orientation,” commented Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese, who welcomed the news.

“As the nation’s largest private employer, Walmart shows that doing the right thing is also good for business. We urge them to continue to move forward by ensuring all of their LGBT employees receive equal benefits.”

Walmart has previously come under fire from LGBTI groups because of its perceived lack of protection for LGBTI staff and for its support of anti-gay campaigns.
