DA COUNCILLOR WINS MR. GAY SA
Lance Weyer, a Democratic Alliance councillor from East London, scooped the title of Mr. Gay South Africa 2011 in Johannesburg on Saturday night.
Weyer is a Representative Councillor in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality in the Eastern Cape for the DA and serves on the Health and Public Safety Standing Committee as well as the Special Programs Strategic Committee.
The 24-year-old was one of the audience favourites at the Mr. Gay South Africa Grand Finale show at the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City on Saturday night.
During the well-attended ceremony, hosted by Cathy Specific and Frank Malaba, Weyer also walked away with the Bone Wear Underwear Model prize and was further honoured for having received the most votes from the public.
In his finalist profile on the Mr. Gay South Africa website, Weyer said: “Mr Gay South Africa isn’t just about being a pretty face, it’s also about finding a representative for the community who can help to bring about change. I’d like to be Mr Gay South Africa 2011 as I’d like to be a role model to South African LGBTI youth.”
Weyer told Mambaonline that he was ecstatic about his win. “I’m excited. I’m honoured. I think I’m still in shock. Please ask me again tomorrow when I can think again,” he said good-naturedly.
He added that he had been convinced that the title would be taken by fellow finalist Alexander Steyn, who came second in the competition and was also one of the favourites of the audience.
Before awarding Steyn his runner-up title, Mr. Gay South Africa Director Coenie Kukkuk explained that Steyn would be officially known as the ‘Deputy Mr. Gay South Africa 2011’.
Steyn is 29-year-old architect, singer, dancer, actor and artist from Johannesburg who says that he is committed to “speak out against hate speech and homophobia”.
Casper Bosman, a 28-year-old fashion designer from Bloemfontein, placed third.
The winners were chosen through a combination of various rounds of judging, SMS votes from the public as well as their performance on Saturday night.
Weyer will represent South Africa in the upcoming Mr. Gay World 2012 competition, which will be held in Johannesburg next April.
Saturday’s event was attended by representatives from Mr. Gay World, including CEO and President of Mr. Gay World Erik Butter, who expressed their enthusiasm for South Africa’s hosting of the 2012 competition.
In the previous two years that South Africa participated in Mr. Gay World, the country’s representatives, Charl van den Berg (2010) and Francois Nel (2011), went on to win the global title.
And so the DA wins again! Congrats, Lance on your title. Make us proud.

Ah, Alexander didn’t take it… Don’t matter! Next time, buddy! Congrats Lance!
Just change the goddamn title
Mr Muscle Took it!! Yay!!
Dear everyone thank you all for an unforgettable weekend in Joburg after 7 years with Mr Gay Europe and four years with Mr Gay World and numerous national finals all over I can say with the hand on my heart that is was the best national final I ever have attended. You have given national producers something to reach for and aspire! It has been an honor to be on the panel of judges and I hope to see all of you again during Mr Gay World in April next year! Regards, Tore Aasheim, President of Mr. Gay Europe.
Well done Lance my mate
well done Lance and well done Eastern Cape
Lance!! we are so proud of you! Cheesh! You are beefy! Good for you my friend!
Aunty Bee!
Hmmm. So when someone wins was always procedure to punt their political party before his/her name?
I think mamba should remain impartial and should have slighty mentioned his occupation in the article. Like they did with Steyn and Bosman.
Mamba it doesn’t help reporting on issues when as an organization you favour one political party over another. Your credibility has been compromised. If i were you, i would edit the heading.
And that is why the media is in so much trouble, the lack of impartiality is one of it.
The press punted the DA bit, on the website of MrGSA it is not even mentioned – I looked: “Lance is a graduate of University of Fort Hare and the University of South Africa, with experience in the Educational and Psychological services industries. He is currently a serving PR Councillor at the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality. He serves on the Health & Public Safety Standing Committee as well as the Special Programs Strategic Committee, which deals with programs and initiatives and their integration into other municipal operations on issues such as HIV/AIDS, TB, women, children and the disabled amongst others”
Would an ANC Councillor have won?! Bad form
Congratulations to the DA Party!!!!
Its a case of “the results you seek is the results you’ll find”!! if they wanted more black contestants they could easily have found them! like you say and we know, there are many pageants being held in our township and coloured communities.. Cape town almost every year has only white entrants, with the most diverse racial groups in South Africa, you can only imagine the racial disparities happening down south. Also very white, with gays very divided in the Cape.
Cape Town pride is made up of almost all whites and they even used “jou ma se pride” as a slogan one year, how demeaning! lots of uproar from coloured people!! but alas, the devide is continuing, whites always try their hand at authoritativeness.. They claim their first “Gay” status and then oppress us… This circus of a pageant “MR GSA” is no different!
I say we take them to the newspapers, ETV, Special Assignment etc.. this shit gotta stop! and now a political mouthpiece for the DA too.. oh no!!! we must stop this shit!
And then you wonder why Cape Town Pride is in such a mess.. yes people! gay whites can also be corrupt! They have not produced a financial statement for the last few years… with Ian Mcmahon in the mix, one could only raise questions on how he got to his little cape gay empire… clubs and festivals, all being promoted by each other – cartel like… I tell you, we must ask the Hawks to investigate! something is amiss there.. dont even mention the word “racist” in the greenpoint area.. its so evident, that for Miss Gay Western Cape just to be recognised. they had to hire the SeaPoint hall.. pathetic, but as a coloured event, they were so desperate to get the attention and recognition of the whites! And still, they didnt really attend the event. Why? cause its run by coloureds..
And teh only reason why Gay PATHETIC flag of South Africa was there, was becuase the want to exploit us with their money making scheme by selling these fake gay flags that has the outline of our national Flag superimposed on it.. And wait for it, for the effort, we charge you and try and duplicate, dan vat ons jou hof toe!! Yup! even patented the design, if that doesnt tell you that they out to make money, after coming from overseas platsak, they had to think of a way to exploit us gullible gays! We must boycott initaitives like MRGSA and gayflag of sa.. they opportunist and sharks hidden inside out rainbow!
gay whites can also be corrupt??? ur generalising. shows ur ignorance
Miss Gay Western Cape is just as racist, only coloureds, NO Indian, white or African. At least there were 2 coloureds, one African and one Indian in Mr GSA
What an asshole u are
You sound like a bitter old jealous queen with a carrot up your doos who has never amounted to anything in life and can’t stand it if anyone else comes up with amazing ideas, pageants, prides, clubs and more. So stop your personal vendettas all over MAMBAONLINE and shut the fuck up.
At the KZN regionals ALL the contestants were black – two made it to the finals, Fahraaz and Mnqobi.
So as it sounds, Did you only select him because he could further the cause of Mr Gay South Africa as a political representative affiliated to the DA? I have worrying thoughts of this pageant, something that is suppose to represent gay men and all we see is white gays, racist-excuses for lack of inclusivity, afrikaners at the forefront and absolutely no representation whatsoever! And now punting of a political that is mostly championed by white people who fear blacks, who reminiscent the past! Its frighting! and i mean this! and Im white btw.. not a good sign!!
Its not about race. Its about running the country properly. If you think the ANC is doing that to the best of its ability, then I might as well think the DA, not the ANC is. Its not reminiscing the past. Ignorant.
so do you think because you white and youre punting these stupid allegations, more people should believe you? there were non white contestants this year, next year why dont you go out and recruit contestants? talk is cheap! congrads lance you deserve it. Oh and do try and keep up with politics before you make such racist comments!
and this is onw is just because you started it – IM BLACK AND THIS IS MY VIEWPOINT!
At the KZN regionals ALL the contestants were black – two made it to the finals, Fahraaz and Mnqobi.
4 of the 6 judges at the Grand Finale were from overseas – Norway, Canada, Philippines, Australia. I was there. I doubt it if they even know what the DA is .. Don’t talk about something you do not know of.
The press punted the DA bit, on the website of MrGSA it is not even mentioned – I looked: “Lance is a graduate of University of Fort Hare and the University of South Africa, with experience in the Educational and Psychological services industries. Referring to the first comments, Cape Town and directed to the MR Gay orgonisors. In Durban, they only keep Mr Gay in upmarket venue’s, where the white, up market guys go. Not a venue that any Black persons would even know of. (I’m white myself) Every year they seem to advertise with upmarket guys, where they can get sponsors or where they know their sponsors will support them. Think its time that they change their judges also, cause they always the same or have some influence from sponsors. Let’s face it, MR Gay is a money making game, depended on their sponsors and who can bring more money to them. Referring to some statement released a while ago by MR Gay SA – fancy words, but I also noticed that you did not make any special effort in advertising or promoting Mr Gay SA in established GLBTI organisations that majority have black people. Lets hope the New Mr Gay SA makes a difference and change that.
At the KZN regionals ALL the contestants were black – two made it to the finals, Fahraaz and Mnqobi. So there goes your argument out the door.
Back to the actuall topic, congrats Lance. You deserved it!!!!
Back to the actuall topic, congrats Lance. You deserved it!!!!
Yes, well done!
At the KZN regionals ALL the contestants were black – two made it to the finals, Fahraaz and Mnqobi … so stop complaining and enter, you can’t win the lotto if you don’t buy a ticket.
Reality check – one is not black, and no, getting two suppose black people in the finials don’t mean that you reached the black community.
So why don’t you enter?

And here the DA supporters certainly dont disappoint! If they can further their cause they will do anything! Look at Helen, she’s even paying people to go get tested for HIV, just to get popularity in the press and to outshine other parties – despite the moral and ethical viewpoints made by many like the Medical counsel of SA. They will go at lengths and we have seen the crass and immoral behavior in society that power hungry individuals and parties can do. No matter who it is! Its also easy to be criticising the ANC government for what they found and how they had to deal with a country that was for almost 50 years under apartheid rule, where only whites benefited and where a handful spoke against their very own racist government, to today, taking the higher ground because they need to stand in the same queue as the poor and the needy in current conditions. your reign of power has ended and you now find yourself in a democracy where the majority has voted. They have spoken, and if you do not agree we will have no problem in waving goodbye to you like we did with many other others. If you want to contribute and stay, leave your apartheid mentality at home and try and be inclusive, dont put black people down because that is what you have be taught during your upbringing and trying to control and oppress others such behavior. Waving old apartheid flags is also not ok and talking of the days when whites ruled is also reminiscing of the past – period. Be part of the rainbow nation or go play your race games in aussie.
DA DA You are not the brightest crayon in the boc are you???????? PLEASE do yourself a favour and take a whole year off (thats hoping that you do something constructive for a living) and start to READ!!!! And try to understand what you read and make sure you have facts ,organisations ,councels dealing with specific things right…then you READ and LEARN a bit further to gain knowledge about the last 50 years before you make your lack of knowledge with your sweeping statements so public! …I really feel sorry for you….
um OH BOY, actually your got it wrong. What a tool you are.. Denial is a nasty thing i suppose.
Well done to the DA and well done to Lance. Lets not take the comments in a negative way, but adding on to all the things Lance must improve on and make a difference. Its all up to him now.
The new Mr Gay SA got all my support: Congratulations and well done! An ambassador of note, all you sour crows fly elsewhere as all you do is embarress yourself!
Well spoken lol
Did not know this was a POLITICAL PARTY THING.
Ya. Pity
Press Release 14.2011: MR GAY SOUTH AFRICA AND MR GAY NAMIBIA SPEAK AFTER ATTACK
East London, South Africa 09 December 2011 –
Mr. Gay South Africa 2011, Lance Weyer, a representative councillor of the Buffalo City Municipality, which includes East London, Bisho and King Williams Town, issued a statement relating to the physical attack this week on the first ever Mr Gay Namibia, Wendelinus Hamutenya.
Weyer said: This attack comes only months after the United Nations passed a resolution (proposed by South Africa) expressing grave concern at acts of violence and discrimination, in all regions of the world, committed against individuals because of their sexual orientation and gender identity. It passed with 23 votes in favour, 19 opposed and three abstentions, amid strong criticism of South Africa by some African nations. The fact of the matter is that Africa is not a great place to live in if you are homosexual! South Africa is the only country in Africa where the rights of LGBTI people are fully protected in law. In Namibia, like most African countries, it is a crime to be gay. Sodomy is a crime in Namibia according to the archaic Roman-Dutch common law, which was imposed by the South African apartheid government. Common law is a legal tradition based mainly on precedent court verdicts, while there is no codified sodomy provision in Namibia. Laws that discriminate validate other kinds of discrimination. Laws that require equal protections reinforce the moral imperative of equality. And practically speaking, it is often the case that laws must change before fears about change dissipate.
It must also be noted that in Wendelinuss case he is also a member of the opposition party in Namibia, as I am in South Africa. Political freedom is not common place in Africa; hence it is not entirely impossible that the ruling party could be behind the attack. Their former president and founding father, Sam Nujoma, is an outspoken anti-gay campaigner.
The fight for LGBTI rights in Namibia is far from over, and I firmly believe that it is the responsibility of all of us to stand up for our brothers and sisters that are being persecuted in their homelands in Africa in particular. I would like to see us learn from and appreciate each other beyond sexual orientation, but at this moment in time that is a dream that is far from reality. It is nevertheless a dream that is well worth striving for! Alone we are weak, but together we are strong.
Hamutenya meanwhile posted on the Mr Gay World Facebook page that he is fine and will continue his struggle. He said: l personally would like to inform you that l am ok and fit to face [the world]. This kind of violence in various forms occurs to persons from different walks of life in my country. The relevance of this incident may have a connotation to my title; perhaps they thought I had heaps of prize money in my pockets. Likely it was my sexual orientation that made me a target – even my political support that angered them. Or perhaps, and most likely, it was just plain and simply out of greed.
I have strong opinions about various issues and I believe I have a nice way of reaching out to people. I find everyone interesting and I enjoy listening to a persons life experience and thoughts and opinions when it comes to sexual orientation for instance.
I love my friends and I feel like a genuinely good person through and through who always has a smile on his lips. I dont take myself too seriously and I am open which make people feel secure around me. Were all different. I feel it is important to live ones own life, and not through others. So as you can tell, I am a proud young gay Namibian man!
Both Weyer and Hamutenya will represent their countries at the upcoming Mr Gay World 2012 competition, which is to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, after the local producers, Mr. Gay South Africa (Pty) Ltd. won the hosting bid in Manila, Phillipinnes in March. The competition will run over 5 days from 4 to 8 April 2012, culminating in the Grand Finale at The Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City on Sunday 8 Apr. 2012 at 8 pm.
Tickets are available at Computicket from R100 for students and the underprivileged to R500 for the VIP section on the balcony. An Early Bird offer of R50 off all regular tickets is applicable to 31 Dec. 2011.
I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Proud to be GAY right now…….
