Real Madrid’s Coach Jose Mourinho makes a mockery of efforts to end homophobia in football by using an anti-gay slur while inspecting the field at the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow.

The Portuguese-born Mourinho is heard on camera using the Spanish word “maricones” (“faggots”) to describe match officials before a Champions League game in the Russian capital.

“And those faggots…they are not saying what kind of balls we are playing with”, he says.

The footage was shown on Spanish television channel Quatro.

The European Gay and Lesbian Sports Federation (EGLSF), an organisation representing over 17,000 LGBT athletes across Europe, called on UEFA to take action against Mourinho for the comments.

“Homophobia is unacceptable from anyone in football, much less from one of the game’s most senior figures. We are deeply disappointed that Mr Mourinho is casually using homophobic terms of abuse in his workplace,” said Louise Englefield, co-president of the EGLSF.

“It is especially sad that these comments have been made during the International Football v Homophobia campaign week. This is a time during which the European football community should be joining forces to tackle discrimination and prejudice against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people,” she said.

Mourinho has coached some of the world’s top football teams including Porto, Chelsea and Internazionale.

On Thursday, Ravel Morrison, a midfielder for West Ham United, was fined £7,000 by the England Football Association (FA) for using the word “faggot” in a tweet directed at another Twitter user.

This week, the FA launched a four-year-long campaign to stamp out homophobia in English football.
