Adam Lambert has made music history by becoming the first openly-gay artist to reach the No. 1 spot on America’s Billboard album chart.

His second album, Trespassing, debuted at the top of the chart, selling 77,000 copies in its first week of release in the U.S.

“WOW! Trespassing made its debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 this week! Thank you to the Glamily for helping me make HISTORY!” tweeted the star on Wednesday.

AfterElton pointed out that while other gay artists, such as George Michael and Elton John, had No. 1 Billboard albums, they were not out at the time of topping the chart. They also failed to reach the top spot again after coming out.

Lambert (30) became an international star when he finished as the runner-up on the eighth season of American Idol in 2009.

He came out as gay soon after, released a successful debut album and was nominated for a 2010 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for the track Whataya Want from Me.

According to Billboard, Lambert is the seventh American Idol finalist to reach No. 1, following Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Clay Aiken, Underwood, Chris Daughtry (of Daughtry) and Scotty McCreery.
