A court has found Portuguese male model Renato Seabra guilty of brutally murdering his wealthy older lover in a New York City hotel room last year.

In January 2011, Renato Seabra (23) bludgeoned Carlos Castro (65) – a high profile journalist in Portugal – with a computer monitor, stomped on his head, castrated him and gouged out one of his eyes with a corkscrew.

Seabra, who is known for modelling underwear, claimed that “the power of the monster was in the balls” and he was trying to take away Castro’s homosexuality by removing his testicles.

Seabra then took a shower, stole around $1,500 from Castro’s wallet, hung a ‘do not disturb’ sign on the hotel room door and went for a walk.

Prosecutors successfully argued that Seabra attacked Castro when he discovered that his lover of three months intended to break up with him and would no longer provide him with a lavish lifestyle.

The two men were on a trip to the US, paid for by Castro, and staying in a suite at the InterContinental New York Times Square hotel when the incident took place.

Seabra’s defence countered that he had a psychotic break, believed that God was guiding him to eradicate homosexuality and that he was not in his right mind during the murder.

On Friday, the jury found Seabra guilty of second degree murder. He will be sentenced on December 21st and could face life imprisonment.

“This was a brutal and sadistic crime, where Renato Seabra bludgeoned, choked, and mutilated his victim before murdering him,” said Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance in a statement.

“Carlos Castro was not only betrayed by his spurned lover, but met a very painful and violent end far from his home.”
