Madonna sings with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis at the Grammy Awards

Madonna joined Macklemore & Ryan Lewis to perform the nominated Same Love gay marriage anthem while 33 couples got married during last night’s Grammy Awards.

During the performance by the duo and vocalist Mary Lambert in Los Angeles, rapper, actress and talk show host Queen Latifah appeared on stage to officiate the marriages of the couples, gay and straight, who were located in the aisles near the stage.

Madonna then stepped out wearing a white suit to sing a slowed-down excerpt of her classic 1986 hit Open Your Heart along with a choir.

The queen of pop – a seven time Grammy winner – has been a vocal supporter of the LGBT community during her 30-year-long career.

The moving performance saw many in the audience, including singer and American Idol judge Keith Urban, wiping away tears as the couples left the auditorium.

Same Love was written in support of Macklemore’s two gay uncles and gay godfather and is also about how Macklemore himself thought he might be gay when he was younger.

Earlier, Neil Portnow, president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences told Billboard that there was no intention for the mass wedding to be a stunt.

“I expect that people with all kinds of opinions might voice them, and that’s healthy,” he said. “We don’t need to stoop to the level of trying to find gimmicks and sensationalistic approaches to what we do.”

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis took home three Grammys, including Best Rap Album for The Heist and Best New Artist. They missed out the Song of the Year award for Same Love, however.
