33 gay and straight couples were married at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night

Sunday night’s mass wedding at the Grammys, which was broadcast live on television during rappers Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ performance of their song Same Love, has outraged conservatives in the United States.

The music award ceremony saw 33 couples – both gay and straight – being married near the stage by talk show host Queen Latifah while pop star Madonna sang her 80s hit Open Your Heart.

Although the spectacle generally received wide support, others were less gracious; describing it on Twitter as “anti-Christian” and “propaganda” and accusing the Grammys of pushing a political viewpoint onto the public.

Mississippi Republican Congressman Steven Palazzo wrote on Facebook: “Unfortunately, Hollywood doesn’t value the same conservative beliefs we do in Mississippi. Last night’s demonstration at the #Grammys is a perfect example of their disconnect.”

Texas radio host Lynn Woolley in an article called the event a “celebration of perversity.”

Former television star Kirk Cameron, best known as a teen heartthrob in the 80’s TV show Growing Pains and who’s since become a campaigner against same-sex marriage, also weighed in on the show.

“How did you like the Grammys all out assault on the traditional family?” Cameron wrote on Facebook. “The lines were drawn thick and dark. Now more than ever, we must work together to create the world we want for our children,” he ranted.

Radio talk show host and political commentator Rush Limbaugh said that the event “was horrible, it was despicable,” while Fox News pundit Todd Starnes called the Grammys “sick” and accused it of “mocking marriage” and “cramming a social agenda down our throats.”

This year’s Grammy Awards were watched by 28.5 million viewers in the US alone. According to the CBS network, this was “the second largest audience for the awards broadcast since 1993.”
