New York hosted the 49th New York City Pride parade in Manhattan on Sunday. The event took up a total of 16 streets, from Greenwich Village right up to the canyon of Fifth Avenue.
Said to be the original Pride, the event was inspired by the 28 June 1969 Stonewall Inn riots that launched the modern LGBT Rights Movement. That historic incident saw members of the community protesting against ongoing homophobic and transphobic police raids. The parade route, as is tradition, passed by the inn on Christopher Street, where it all began.
New York City Pride is also one of the largest pride events in the world, with over 2 million people in attendance at this year’s festival. The 2018 theme was “Defiantly Different,” a statement in response to US President Donald Trump’s treatment of the country’s LGBT+ community.
“This year’s theme is about showing our power, squaring our shoulders in the face of adversity, and continuing to sculpt that magnetic bond within the LGBTQ+ community and our allies,” said David Studinski, NYC Pride Co-Chair.
The march was led by tennis legend Billie Jean King and transgender advocate Tyler Ford, who were Pride Grand Marshals. Proudly bisexual Former Sex and the City actress and New York governor contender, Cynthia Nixon, was also present with her wife.
Singer and songwriter Lady Gaga was another of the celebrities in attendance, wearing denim pants with suspenders and belts that resembled the LGBTI+ rainbow flag.
