Queer stories are set to shine at the kykNET Silwerskermfees 2019 film festival with Skeef: Die dokumentêr, a riveting local documentary about the realities of being LGBTI+ in South Africa.

The Afrikaans documentary has been selected as one of the official films screening at this year’s festival. The documentary is directed and produced by kykNET & Kie TV presenter and Jacaranda FM radio host Renaldo Schwarp.

After its screening at the festival, a panel discussion will be held about the tension between religion and the LGBTI+ community and how the ‘gay debate’ is primed to divide the church. Schwarp will be one of the panellists.

Skeef: Die dokumentêr offers an insightful and raw representation of queer life – the highs, the lows and even the high heels. It features big names such as comedian Marc Lottering, Afrikaans singer Joe Foster and Kanarie co-writer Charl-Johan Lindenfelder.

“I’m truly honoured that kykNET Silwerskerm Festival has chosen to put a spotlight on LGBTI+ issues by selecting Skeef to screen at this year’s festival. This film speaks about and highlights the plight of so many who are suffering solely because of their sexual identity. I’m overjoyed that we can heighten these conversations,” says Schwarp

Skeef explores the issues facing queer individuals in the South African context and was originally released as a four-part documentary series on Netwerk24 during International LGBTI+ Pride month to rave reviews. The production has been lauded as “thought-provoking”, “an educational tool” and “a must-see for parents”.

In June, Schwarp, 27, was included in The Mail and Guardian’s prestigious 200 Young South Africans list. The radio host was listed in the arts and entertainment category and was recognised, amongst other things for his groundbreaking work on Skeef.

“I’ve been blown away by the amazing response since we launched in June. It will be a crowning moment to present the repackaged documentary at such a prestigious occasion like Silwerskermfees” Schwarp added.

Every year, the kykNET Silwerskermfees is a highlight of the local film and social calendar, welcoming only the best in the cinematic arts and playing host to celebrity-filled premieres and film events. It takes place at The Bay Hotel in Camps Bay from 21-24 August.
