MAKING GAY HEALTH SEXY
They have Clifton Beach, Table Mountain, the wine estates, a buzzing gay scene and now Cape Town’s gay community is privileged yet again; South Africa’s first dedicated gay men’s sexual health service is up and running in the Mother City.
So what makes Health4Men so different to other projects working with gay men, such as Pretoria’s OUT and Cape Town’s Triangle Project?
“We literally offer a one-stop sexual health service specifically designed for gay men”, explains Dr Kevin Rebe, a medical specialist who leads the Health4Men team.
“Besides HIV testing, we offer free HIV management and blood tests, and we supply free ARV treatment through our partnership with the Western Cape Department of Health.”
The menu of free services includes STI diagnosis and treatment, CD4 and viral load testing, prostate health monitoring, vaccinations against hepatitis and ARV treatment.
Glenn de Swardt manages Health4Men’s psychosocial component. “Our mandate includes prevention strategies and we’re working with guys who are HIV negative as well as HIV positive guys. We’re intent on getting gay men to engage with issues relating to enjoying responsible sex.”
Health4Men has already conducted two successful seminars: during September their first seminar addressed bare-backing and they conducted an “Ass Class” during October.
“As gay men we seldom discuss our anuses”, says Glenn. “Even gay men are affected by the social taboo that surrounds the anus.”
We’re trying to make our messaging as interesting as possible. We need to make responsible messaging sexy…
Kevin and Glenn are a complementary and formidable team; during the “Ass Class”, for example, Kevin focused on anal physiology and health while Glenn addressed psychological factors and focused on how we relate to our own anuses.
“We’re also offering free professional individual and couple counseling as well as support groups. We’re busy setting up a group for guys who are HIV positive and soon we’ll have a group for negative guys whose partners are positive,” says Glenn, who left the country’s oldest LGBT organisation, Triangle Project, earlier this year.
A group for guys with sexual addictions is also being explored. “Our November seminar will take the form of a demonstration and workshop on bondage and control. Responsible sex messaging isn’t only about using condoms and we’re trying to make our messaging as interesting as possible. We need to make responsible messaging sexy”.
Health4Men’s office is located in Cobern Street in the heart of Cape Town’s gay village precinct – quite literally: They’re located between the newly opened Amsterdam Action Bar and Bar Code, the local leather bar.
“Our location in the gay heart of the city is ideal but we’re intent on making our expertise and services available to men living in the townships, the Cape Flats and even rural areas… our target extends far beyond guys living in the city bowl,” explains Glenn.
Health4Men has acquired a wing of the Woodstock Day Hospital and will launch a new clinic in Woodstock, specifically addressing gay men’s sexual health needs, during December.
“The new clinic in Woodstock is currently being fully refurbished and it will be the first specialised clinic to offer free services to gay men that address all aspects of their sexual health, including HIV”, says Helen Struthers, from the PHRU’s PEPFAR project, Health4Men’s sponsor.
Look out for the Health4Men team at this year’s MCQP party on 20 December – they’ll be managing the darkroom – and follow their progress here on Mamba.

Health for Men. Dear Mambaonline,
Would you please consider making the lecture material used in Ass Class available on the regular Mambaonline website? I’m sure it would be appreciated by many guys.
Regards,
Jaco
Health4Men. What a fantastic development!
Health4men. It just feels so good to see the health department finally take a stand and eventually do something constructive, could this be linked to our new Minister of Health? And good to know what Glen de Swart is up to, he’s been far too quiet for the past few months. I think this is a very bold step and I wish them every success. Bravo to everyone involved in this initiative.
Health 4 Men. Yes indeed BRAVO and about bloody time!
Better late than never but it seems everything happens in Cape Town first? Why is this, why do they always seem more organised?
It isn’t about the place but it is about the people. I think Cape Town just has a history of making things happen? And they have more gay role models and a richer gay history which just seems to make it easier for them. Maybe the question should rather be “what holds Jhb back?” Too much in-fighting, too much bickering and too few powerful gay figures who can cut through the nonsense and bull-shit. At the end of the day it comes down to true leadership. Well done to Glenn and the doctor and I hope the guys in Cape Town appreciate what they have here and that they really use this service. I hope Jhb and the rest of the country will learn from you guys.
Yes what’s the problem with Johannesburg/Pretoria or even Gauteng as a whole? Why do we always stay behind?
Sounds good!
Well done and congratulations to them for doing this
great news!
health4men. Dear Sir
This is an excellent project you guy have embarked on. It would be great to have these projects for guys in Durban as well as in Jbn. I have been to places like the hot house, rec etc, I was in constint fear of contacting sti or hiv, therefore i found in hard to react with guys. My friend is Hiv P. I am still with him I hate being active and it adds to lots of porblems.
I would like to help in your project, and help our fellow men in safe play.
I am stil in the closet Email me on: nexcom@webmail.co.za
Thanks Nico
jhb help. Maybe the marketing has been crap, but http://www.men2men.co.za has been offering the same service in JHB for a while. Check it out.
Can’t compare. You can’t compare the two: Men2Men is a website with advice – not a clinic or office nor does it offer workshops… The site is run by OUT – but God knows what they do other than throw parties where they test people for HIV.
OK the Pretoria crowd are simply useless, all big talk and no real action and they don’t offer any treatment for HIV, like free ARVS, which this new service does. Also this new service has professional people, a medical specialist and Glen de Swart, so they have more experience. Every success to them and I hope the guys in Cape Town really love the service!
oh no, definitely not the same, the pretoria guys are all about big talk and TESTING TESTING TESTING but they don’t offer treatment, they don’t have a doctor on the staff like this new project Health4Men and they certainly DON’T offer free treatment for STIs and they certainly DO NOT offer free ARVs, if anything man2man’s marketing has been TOO good because their is very little to back it up. All strength to the new Health4Men project, they seem to have pulled it all together and congrats on getting the Department of Health involved. I’ll be checking them out when I’m down there in December.

Yet another reason to move down to Cape Town
Sounds like a very good move
The doc. Man he is one sexy doctor…lol
Health4Men. Fantastic Guys! It’s time we caught up to cities like London, Paris & NYC in this regard. I hope you get all the help you need… xx
CONGRATS – about time this happened, the gay and lesbian organisation in Cape Town now only focus on advocacy and has forgotten what services are and they have lost the plot with regard to HIV so thank the good Lord that Health4Men has come along at a good time.
Read the article on page 2 of the December issue of EXIT, about Triangle Project in Cape Town, written by Drummond Marias!
How about publishing Ass Class on Mambaonline?
