5,000 naked Kenyans to march against pro-gay Obama

In a rather bizarre move, a Kenyan political party plans to lead a mass nude march this week against President Obama’s support for LGBT equality.

The American leader’s visit to the country has sparked controversy in the wake of the US Supreme Court legalising same-sex marriage, with Obama’s backing.

Kenyan critics have warned the president not to speak out in support of gay and lesbian rights during his trip.

According to local media, Republican Liberty Party leader Vincent Kidala has now written to the Nairobi Administration Police Commandant informing the authorities of his intention to hold the peaceful procession on 22 and 23 July at 10am.

“The procession shall be carried out by approximately 5,000 totally naked men and women to protest over the United States of America President Barrack Obama’s open and aggressive support for homosexuality,” wrote Kidala .

He explained that the protest’s objective is “for [Obama] to see and understand the difference between a man and woman.”

Whether Kidala and his relatively obscure party have the support to muster a significant demonstration remains to be seen. Earlier this month, “pro-family” groups, including anti-gay MPs and clerics, held a a march against LGBT rights in Nairobi but only managed to assemble less than 40 protesters.

The Republican Liberty Party last year proposed a bill that would allow for the public stoning to death of any foreigner found guilty of sodomy or homosexuality, or any Kenyan who commits “aggravated homosexuality”. The bill has yet to be heard in Parliament.

Gay sex is already illegal in Kenya, with penalties of between five to 14 years’ imprisonment.
