British singer and songwriter Sam Smith dedicated his Oscar win on Sunday night to the LGBT community, although he was confused about his facts.

Smith received the best original song honour (with co-writer Jimmy Napes) at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles for his James Bond theme, Writing’s on the Wall.

The openly gay singer went on stage and said: “I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope that we can all stand together as equals one day.”

Smith, however, has been criticised for suggesting that he’s the first openly gay man to win an Oscar.

He told the audience: “I read an article a few months ago by Sir Ian McKellen, and he said that no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar.

“If this is the case, even if it isn’t the case, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around the world,” said Smith.

It actually isn’t the case. McKellen had pointed out that no openly gay man had won in the category of best actor, specifically.

A number of openly LGBT people have won other Oscars in the past, including in Smith’s very own best original song category, such as Elton John, Stephen Sondheim and Melissa Etheridge.

This year, Smith beat out self-identified bisexual star Lady Gaga and her song Til It Happens to You (from The Hunting Ground) as well as transgender performer Anohni (Manta Ray, from Racing Extinction).

Gaga was praised for her moving performance of Til It Happens to You at Sunday’s awards ceremony, while Anohni boycotted the event because she was one of two performers not asked to perform.
