Miss Gay Jozi returns for a night of glamour at City Hall

Johannesburg’s biggest and boldest drag pageant extravaganza, Miss Gay Jozi, returns for another sparkling outing on Saturday 28 May 2016 at the City Hall – and you’re invited to attend!

The audience will be treated to a lineup of entertaining drag performances as well as the climactic crowning of one of the ten competing princesses as the city’s most glamorous queen.

Miss Gay Jozi 2016 will not only represent Gauteng’s LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community, but will also embody the principles of equality, freedom and self-expression.

“This year we are looking for someone who is dedicated to the title,” says Pageant Director Dino Abrahams. “They must be a Gauteng resident and willing to go the extra mile. They must be out and proud and exude poise and strength.”

He goes on to add: “Miss Gay Jozi empowers the community to be proud and accepting of who we are. The event also greatly boosts each contestant’s sense of self-belief and confidence, helping them to make a difference in their world.”

Miss Gay Jozi will take home a host of prizes, most significantly R6,000 cash, jewelry and a glittering gown from Malindzi Strong of New York City, valued at R16,000.

Previous winners have been profiled in both LGBT and mainstream media, including The Star, Cliff Central, Reuters, Business Day, SABC 2, Power FM, ENCA, City Buzz, Lucky Radio, Drum Magazine and Mambaonline.com.

Now in its fourth year, the event will be held for the first time in the Johannesburg City Hall. Abrahams describes the location as “a beautiful, historic venue, oozing grace and elegance, that’s conveniently located for all.”

He urges members of the LGBT community and their friends to come out to support Miss Gay Jozi. “It’s not only a fabulous night out, but also celebrates drag and gender-fluidity in a uniquely South African context,” says Abrahams. “It’s not to be missed.”
