The big time! Caster Semenya appears inside the Chappies wrapper
She’s really famous now! Olympic star Caster Semenya has been honoured by being featured on the inside of the Chappies chewing gum wrapper.
The iconic South African treat is known for including a “did you know?” piece of trivia on the inside of its packaging.
Many a South African child has learnt interesting (and not so interesting) facts over the years, thanks to Chappies.
Now, our very own LGBTI hero and her achievements have been featured by the brand, as she discovered to her surprise.
On Wednesday, a delighted Semenya shared an image of the wrapper on Facebook. It reads: “Did you know? Caster Semenya was the first black South African woman to win a medal at the Olympic Games.”
She exclaimed in response: “During my childhood i used to read the ‘Did you knows’ inside the chappies wrapper, but I’ve never thought that 1 day I’d read about myself.”
The post has received hundreds of comments congratulating the athlete for her latest achievement.
It’s possible that Semenya, who won a silver medal at the London Olympics and gold at the Rio Games, might well be the first LGBTI South African to make it to a Chappies trivia question.
The runner was one of only two openly LGBTI South African athletes, along with silver-winning javelin thrower Sunette Viljoen, at the Rio Olympics.
