nandos_everyone_is_wlecome_campaignNando’s, the South African restaurant brand, has stood up for LGBT (and other) inclusiveness in a new campaign that targets incoming US president Donald Trump.

The campaign, called #EveryoneisWelcome, was launched ahead of Trump’s January 20 inauguration and is a bold statement in defiance of the intolerance that’s marked his views, comments and planned policies.

In posters distributed at its Washington DC stores, as well in flyers, newspaper ads and online posts, the company says that it is:

“Immigrant (whether Latino, Middle Eastern, Asian…) employing; Gay (Straight, Bi, Trans…) loving; Muslim (Christian, Jewish, Atheist…) respecting; Racism (Black, White, Latino…) opposing; Equal (Gender, Age, Ability…) paying, and; Multi (Africa, Portugal…) cultural…”

nandos_EveryoneisWelcome_Statement_webIt goes on to state: “On January 20, 2017, Nando’s will be what it has always been: a place for everyone to get the world’s best mouth-watering, flame-grilled Peri-Peri chicken.

“Because while we believe that all men and women are created equal, not all chicken is.”

Burton Heiss, CEO of Nando’s PERi-PERi, explained that the campaign was “a statement of who we are, and the values that our company and employees hold dear,” adding that, “It is meant to be as inclusive as possible.”

In South Africa, Nando’s is famed for regularly making headlines with its cheeky advertising that makes comments on politicians and issues of the day.

With recipes based on traditional Portuguese peri-peri chicken, the first branch opened in Johannesburg in 1987. The chain now has more than 1,000 outlets in around 30 countries.
