Armie Hammer and James Woods feud over new gay film

Ouch! Armie Hammer has pointed out fellow actor James Woods’ hypocrisy over his comments about the new gay romance Call Me By Your Name.

Hammer (The Lone Ranger, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.) stars in the movie as Oliver, a 24-year-old American academic who goes to Italy and develops a relationship with a 17-year-old youth named Elio, played by Timothée Chalamet. (In Italy, the age of consent is between 14 and 16, depending on the circumstances.)

The film, based on André Aciman’s novel, is receiving critical praise internationally but the twice-Oscar-nominated Woods was not impressed by the content, specifically the love affair between Hammer’s character and a younger man.

On Monday, Woods tweeted in reference to the film, “As they quietly chip away the last barriers of decency,” and included the hashtag “#NAMBLA”. NAMBLA (The North American Man/Boy Love Association,) is a controversial fringe organisation in the US that supports relationships between men and boys.

Hammer responded with a tweet noting that Woods, like many other powerful and famous men, had had affairs with much younger women. “Didn’t you date a 19 year old when you were 60…….?” he asked.

It’s been reported that Woods, at the age of 59 dated 19-year-old Ashley Madison, and then at the age of 66 began dating Kristen Bauguess, who was 20-years-old at the time.

To add to Woods being called out for double standards, actress Amber Tamblyn claimed that she had been hit on by the older actor when she was a minor.

“James Woods tried to pick me and my friend up at a restaurant once,” she tweeted. “He wanted to take us to Vegas. ‘I’m 16’ I said. ‘Even better’ he said.”

Woods has since responded that Tamblyn’s claim “is a lie” and that he has never dated a minor. “I think maybe she should stick to ‘feminist poetry.’ Fiction isn’t her forte,” he tweeted.

Call Me By Your Name is set to be released in South Africa in February 2018.
