Here’s Boer Soek ’n Vrou’s first gay farmer

The popular Afrikaans dating reality show Boer Soek ‘n Vrou is back and, for the first time, the contestants include a gay farmer.

The twelfth season of the series features ten farmers who are looking for love. This year’s farmers, who are between 26 and 51, were introduced during a special episode on kykNET (channel 144 on DStv) on Sunday evening.

Like previous seasons, viewers will follow the love journey of five farmers who receive the most letters. The show will be aired over 13 episodes from October. Afrikaans singer and actress Leah has also returned for a second stint as the presenter.

Five farmers are from the Western Cape, two from the Northern Cape, two from the Eastern Cape and one from Gauteng. Nine of the ten male farmers are looking for a female companion and the remaining one hopes to find the ideal male partner.

Thirty-seven-year-old Damian is the show’s first gay farmer. He farms cattle and sheep in Bapsfontein, Gauteng.

Damien, who taught himself to play the piano, believes that farming is in his blood. When it comes to his approach to life, he says: “I’m a soft and a hard person. I know what I want in life and I don’t want to settle for less.”

He goes on to add: “I think things are getting easier for gay farmers but it’s not something that’s very easy. There are still people here and there who raise their eyebrows but there is also a lot of acceptance. We are all just people looking for love.”

Damien says he has struggled to find love because he doesn’t always make the first move. He’s looking for a man who has ambition and will share his love for farm life.
