Billie Eilish has accused Variety magazine of “outing” her on the red carpet, expressing her reluctance to discuss her sexuality publicly.

In a recent Variety profile, the 21-year-old American singer and songwriter opened up about her attraction to women, stating she is “physically attracted” to them.

“I’ve never really felt like I could relate to girls very well,” she told the magazine. “I love them so much. I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real.”

On Saturday, during Variety’s Hitmakers event, where Eilish received the Film Song of the Year award for What Was I Made For, she was questioned by Variety’s Tiana DeNicola about whether she intended to come out in the story.

Eilish, looking somewhat sheepish on the red carpet, responded: “No I didn’t. But I kind of thought, ‘Wasn’t it obvious’? I didn’t realise people didn’t know.

“I just don’t really believe in it [coming out]. I’m just like, ‘Why can’t we just exist’? I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it. Whoops. I saw the article and I was like, ‘Oh, I guess I came out today!’”

She went on to add, seemingly in good spirits: “It’s exciting to me because I guess people didn’t know so it’s cool that they know… Oooh, I’m nervous talking about it. But… I am for the girls!”

Shortly after the interview, the seven-time Grammy winner took to Instagram to express her displeasure with the red-carpet questioning, emphasising her preference for privacy on the matter.

She posted: “Thanks Variety for my award and for also outing me on a red carpet at 11 am instead of talking about anything else that matters.” Eilish clarified her bisexuality, stating, “I like boys and girls, leave me alone about it, please; literally, who cares.”

Despite reportedly losing over 100,000 Instagram followers after coming out, Eilish still boasts an impressive following of 110 million people.
