Hate Crime Murder of Gay 21-Year-Old Diego Jacobs in Cape Town

As Cape Town prepares to commemorate Pride this month, tragic news has emerged of the death of 21-year-old Diego Jacobs, a gay man who was stabbed to death in a suspected hate crime.

According to reports from Daily Voice, Jacobs was murdered in the early hours of Saturday, February 3rd, in Delft, a township on the outskirts of Cape Town.

It is believed that Jacobs, accompanied by two friends, was walking home when he encountered a 20-year-old former neighbour who had previously harassed him about his queer identity, often using derogatory terms.

Despite Jacobs attempting to avoid a confrontation by walking away, the suspect allegedly stabbed him in the neck with a knife, exclaiming “jou moffie” (“you f*ggot”).

Jacobs, who was set to start a new job this week, tragically passed away in one of his friend’s arms.

Arrest and Family Statements

Police have confirmed that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder and is scheduled to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court.

Jacobs’ aunt, Naomi du Preez, revealed that her nephew had been threatened by the suspect in previous altercations.

“But Diego didn’t take it seriously because Diego knew a lot of people were not accepting of the LGBTQ+ community,” said du Preez.

She added: “We feel that justice must prevail and that our ‘moffie’ sons must not be targeted by those that want to hurt and kill our innocent sons.” 

Cape Town Pride Responds

Cape Town Pride Festival Director Wentzel April expressed shock at the murder, which took place just days before the start of the annual three-week-long festival.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our fellow queer sibling, Diego Jacobs. To have been brutally murdered at such a young age is truly devastating,” April told MambaOnline. “Pride not only celebrates our victories as the LGBTQIA+ community, but it is a political protest for equality and justice. We demand that justice prevails!”

April offered Cape Town Pride’s sincere condolences to Jacobs’ family and friends.

Jacobs’ friends took to social media to express their grief over his untimely death. They described him as a loving and vibrant individual who touched the lives of many.

One friend said she was shattered by the news: “How can this happen to you? Guys, please protect our gay friends, that’s family. I love you and may your soul always stay happy the way you were.”

Another wrote: “You were one in a million. You were a people’s person. Everyone knew you cause of the heart you had for many. [You] showed love, spread love wherever you went. We will remember you for who you were and what kind of person you were. You may be gone but will forever be in our hearts.”

In response to the tragedy, a candlelight vigil and march will be held in memory of Jacobs and to denounce LGBTQ hate crimes. The event, organised by the Del-Har Pride Support Group, is scheduled to take place on Thursday, February 8th, in Delft, concluding at the site of the murder.
