The Feather Awards celebrated its sixteenth edition on Thursday, honouring LGBTQIA+ standouts and allies at a celebrity-studded ceremony in Johannesburg.

The trendy Sheds was the venue for a night of recognition, celebration and colourful unity. Even the heavens opened up and gave the Feathers a nod of approval with its blessed showers, giving them a reason to start oh-so-fashionably late.

The event was held under the theme of “Borderless Existence,” aiming to embrace the concept of unity without boundaries, celebrating the ever-expanding diversity within the LGBTQIA+ community and beyond.

The evening was hosted by the dynamic Dineo Langa, Khaya Dladla and Andiswa P Gebashe alongside Pink Carpet hosts Ayanda Makuzeni and Tumi Powerhouse who delivered their signature flair and energy, and ensured that the night was filled with excitement, laughter and unforgettable moments.

Together, they guided attendees through a programme that included heartwarming tributes, stunning performances, and the recognition of individuals who are making a lasting impact.

One of the many highlights of the evening included the presentation of the Simon Nkoli Award, which honours an individual whose work has made an exceptional impact on the LGBTQIA+ community.

This year, the award went to Felipe Mazibuko who was celebrated for his tireless efforts in breaking down societal barriers and helping advance the cause of inclusion for marginalised voices in the fashion world for over two decades.

The African Feather Award of the Year went to HIV and social justice activist and acclaimed film director Zackie Achmat.

Sape Maodi-Swartz and Vaivi ‘Vee’ Swartz were honoured with the Best Rainbow Parenting award

“The LGBTQIA+ community is stronger when we acknowledge and amplify the stories of every individual, especially those whose voices have been underrepresented,” said Thami Kotlolo, co-founder of the Feather Awards.

“Our commitment is to push boundaries and create spaces where everyone, regardless of ability or background. By honouring our nominees, we honour the strength, resilience, and courage of all those who have made a tangible difference in shaping a more inclusive society,” Kotlolo added.
