British singer Robbie Williams performed to a sell out crowd of 61 000 people in Pretoria’s Loftus Versfeld stadium on Monday night. Williams performed some of his best known hits including Feel, Come Undone, Rock DJ and Angel, as well as tracks from his most recent album Intensive Care.

The often self-deprecating 32 year old singer chatted to the charmed crowd, impersonated various other celebrities and often commented on media reports about his life. His voice was in top form and he easily lived up to his reputation as a hard-working master performer.

He commented that his cowboy themed music video for Feel now reminded him of the film Brokeback Mountain; he made sure to add that he wasn’t trying to be homophobic. He however made a point of regularly commenting on the beauty of South Africa’s women (and once about the men), thanking the country for making “your women so accessible”.

William won a libel court case in December last year over a tabloid article that claimed that he was gay. He was awarded an undisclosed amount in damages and received apologies from the publishers.

Williams seemed quite taken with South Africa, saying that it’s “the world’s best kept secret” and promised to return. Williams had earlier performed concerts in Cape Town and Durban as part his world tour. He is set to next perform in Dubai.
