OUTRAGE AT ANTI-GAY COLUMN
A column by veteran South African journalist Jon Qwelane describing gays as “unnatural” has sparked outrage within the gay community.
Discussing the current debate on legalising same-sex marriages in South Africa, Qwelane writes that, “To date, I have not encountered logical and sensible counter-arguments by those who maintain that a woman should be allowed to marry another woman, and a man be allowed to marry another man.”
He accuses proponents of same-sex marriage as being “emotionally-charged” and “with nothing worthwhile to argue”.
Qwelane adds that since gay and lesbian relationships do not lead to procreation, “it is rather illogical for same-sex unions to exist, as such arrangements fly in the face of nature.”
He further cites biblical texts, saying that they, “also show how great a sin homosexuality is in God’s eye!”
While Qwelane oddly enough admits that “I like homosexuals”, he’d prefer they not form part of his family, stating that if his son or daughter came out as gay that, “YES, I would condemn and disown them if they turned out to be homosexuals.”
The article was originally published in the Sunday Sun and has been republished on News24, one of the country’s most widely read online publications. To read the full article, click here.
Qwelane’s long career in journalism, which has also included hosting radio shows, has been marked by controversy. He has been the subject of numerous hate speech complaints to the Broadcasting Complaints Commission, and was suspended for using “abusive” language on-air on Radio 702.
Dear Mr Qwelane. Dear Mr Qwelane
How nice and refreshing to find that your recently-liberated and enfranchised ass has wasted no time in turning around to step on the collective head of the next oppressed population segment. I see your apartheid masters taught you much about discrimination and bigotry.
R.
Aaaand here we go again. When will these poor Bible bashers learn. When the big guy comes to judge he will judge ALL of us as sinners…there is no ‘great’ or small sin.
I fear if there were such a thing as big sin, disowning your own flesh and blood would have to be right up there.
And I always thought of Jon as an intelligent fellow.
Rory Said It Best. Rory said it best – only thing I can add: Jon Qwelane, you sucked on the marrow of apartheid so deeply that you’ve become more like your apartheid predecessors than they ever were.
Congratulations!
And another thing . As Lynn Lavner said: The Bible contains six admonishments to homosexuals and 362 admonishments to heterosexuals. That doesnt mean that God doesnt love heterosexuals. Its just that they need more supervision.
Mr. Qwelane. Seems to me that Mr. Qwelane thinks he is God afterall
On 19 April 2001 Mr. Qwelane hosted a talk show and commented that the Bible was written by men and not necessarily the word of God, a God who, according to adherents in South Africa, supported Apartheid and was discriminatory against oppressed people. He stated that his God was a different God, a God who did not discriminate between people and treated all Peoples on an equal level. Jon Qwelanes utterances in stating that the South African Government is guilty of gross dereliction of duty in its handling of the “illegal immigration problem”, that a benevolent dictatorship is desirable and preferable, that the South Africa Constitution should be suspended; that illegal immigrants be ruthlessly hunted down, jailed and deported; that they be shot on sight, that illegal immigrants are guilty of perpetrating violent crimes against law abiding citizens, and do not deserve to be treated as human beings.
Need I say more?
It is always very sad to see the result of people who have clearly had no experience of what it is like to look at themselves honestly and without the usual smoke and mirrors we tend to walk around with. The loud rantings and ravings of people such as Jon are simply an indication that he is vaguely aware that he has many shortcomings but then we all know that it is easier and far less taxing to simply point your finger at another person and point out anything about them that could distract the world from what you are about. It is cowardly and behind all the bravado that we see, there is an uncertain, unenlightened geezer who should be put away on the shelf. Sit down. Shut up. South Africa has had enough of you.
How unfortunate. I find these types of responses to us homosexuals as almost typical (but being the optimist I am, not always expected). Personally, I have as much dislike for people like Qwelane as he apparently has for our “illgical” kind.
He cites religious reasons why being homosexual is wrong… well, need I say more? I’m sick of these play-play christians trying to force their wishy-washy limited dogma down any and all non-christian throat.
And saying that procreation is the only reason for marriage… well, that’s interesting… I’m sure my grandmother, who was remarried at the ripe old age of 72, was definitely planning on producing another uncle / aunt for me.
*Sigh* I don’t know, sometimes dealing with doff members of society such as this Qwelane guy is such a bore.
Quelane. You’re a fucking asshole, Quelane, in case you didn’t know it.
HA HA !!. Qwelane…how fucken stupid are you?
Being a black man,you should know better than any of us,that the majority of our “previously disadvantaged community”,DOES NOT marry for the purposes of procreation, just look around, and see how many unmarried mothers are around…DUH!!
