JOBURG PRIDE GETS WET
An estimated five thousand gays and lesbians – and their friends and families – turned out for the 18th annual Joburg Pride Parade in Rosebank, Johannesburg, today despite the inclement weather.
“We’re amazed and humbled at the support that our community has shown towards the new Pride organisers,” said Tracey Sandilands, Chairperson of the Joburg Gay Pride Festival Company. “The fact that thousands braved the rain and cold to assert the importance of Pride shows that the event remains entirely relevant.”
Following a performance by Flash Republic on the main stage, the Parade, consisting of over 30 floats and vehicles, and led by the Joburg Metro Police Department, set out through the streets of Rosebank at 11.30am. And, as if on cue, the rain paused for the one and half hour duration of the Parade.
Vibrant displays of the gay rainbow colours were evident on numerous floats as participants walked the circular seven kilometre route. To the sound of thumping dance music and cheers from passers-by the Parade wound its way back to Zoo Lake. Placards and signs demanding equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people were visible among the participants.
While the overall mood of the event was celebratory, the reality that many gays and lesbians are not safe in their communities was also highlighted by the organisers. A minute’s silence was held to mark the brutal murders of two lesbian women, Sizakele Sigasa and Salome Masooa, in Soweto in July, as well as all LGBT victims of hate crime.
Speaking on the main stage, Sandilands made an impassioned demand for tolerance:
“Here today, in the midst of the partying and fun, we remember Sizakele and Salome and together we say ‘Enough’. No longer will we tolerate double standards and discrimination against our community, and we challenge everyone here to speak out against prejudice wherever they find it. It’s time to take our stand against the pockets of homo-prejudice that still exist in our society. It’s time to make our voices heard against hate crimes.”
There were a number of calls at the event for the organisers to host a future Joburg Pride Parade in Soweto, something which the Pride Board says could always be placed on the table. “Rosebank is logistically practical as a venue for an event of this size,” said Sandilands, “but we are an organisation run by and for the community and we urge all stakeholders to come forward and engage with us on their suggestions and needs for next year.”
Following the Parade, the determined crowd of revellers – along with the event’s MCs Elana Afrika, Nicole Fox and Poppy Ntshongwana from national youth radio station 5FM – continued to celebrate their Pride on the muddy fields of Zoo Lake Sports Club.
While a number of performers and events, including the Drag Race were cancelled due to the weather, this did not seem to affect the high spirits of the participants. Pretoria club Legend’s impressive rainbow coloured float, covered in balloons and topped by Mr and Miss Legends on a disco ball, was unanimously awarded the best float by judges Tracey Sandilands and Cape Town Pride Chair Ian McMahon.
With plenty of food, drink and entertainment – including the sounds of DJ Stuart Hillary – on offer the celebrations continued well into the late afternoon.
“Today was a tremendous success, regardless of the weather,” said an enthusiastic Sandilands, adding that, “Pride will be back next year – bigger and better!”
Legends. Congrats Legends!
Never five thousand. How did you get to that figure, there were never an estimated five thousand even if you included the spectators on the route of the parade. But on the whole well done! You may have had more if you kept the 16 year traditional date of last week-end in Sept (29.9.07). Please consider our muslim community when setting 2008 date, sadly they could not be with us ’cause of religious celebrations
Excellent. Wow!! What a day… the rain only added to the fun! So well organised… Flash Republic rocks!!
well done. who gives a hoot how many were there..
WELL DONE in the 10 years of pride it was well put on and well run…..
It was a fantastic day Thank you all who came and to the sec 21 co.
A very big thanks fo 5fm. thanks again you made this event have a lot of credibility.
Best Pride Ever. I think this was the best Pride ever. Well done to the organisers. Everything was well organised, and I think if it wasn’t for the rain, it would have been even better. There were enough food and drinks, and even enough shelter from the rain. You guys have done an absolute brilliant job for a first attempt and I know it can only even get better from here on. Oh, and please keep 5fm as a sponsor, their entertainment was brilliant, again, if it wasn’t for the rain that caused power outages every now and then…
And the Fireman’s Ball afterparty…definately the party of the year! GREAT GREAT venue, fantastic music. It was so full, but not once did I have to wait long to get a drink, or go to the loo. This pride ROCKED

pride. why the lies , bad corporate governes reporting on the commitee ,same old figures over the years , dropping at fast rate . More like 1500 , but have to say there has a PRIDE . So lets look at the startegy for the 21 st Pride 28 th SEPT 2010 to have at least 10 000 , wow the older Pride then commadaed figures like well over 15 000 . We need to be seen , geeting the right partners i.e goverment and corporate buisness on board like to help built the parade ,which case they paide only paid lip servisr to the community at large . It takes at least R1 milliion cash on hand ,the income and expenditure to really have a ”talked about pride ”. The volunatay committe over the years an the future set up may just not suit the challenges going forward , after all they have they paying jobs . but do thank tme and know all the past chairperson for taking the responsible thankless leadership position .
Will it eventally and we have too look at the black gay community to lead the parde into the future as the white community, nos are dwindelling .
pride soweto. Look mr get your facts right before you shout your mouth off…
There is a good mix of gay men and girls/black and white..
when soweto pride gets to the size of joburg pride then lets talk…
They had on their day only 100 people there and the sec 21 helped them to…so come on think before you talk..
well done its a good start..
