The head of the largest conservative Christian group in the US has slammed the revelation that a character in the Harry Potter series of books is gay, and has called for parents to bar their children from reading the novels.
According to Pinknews.co.uk, Roberta Combs, chairperson of the 2.5 million strong Christian Coalition of America, has said that the news that the wizard Albus Dumbledore is gay is not good for the nation’s children.
“It’s not a good example for our children, who really like the books and the movies. I think it encourages homosexuality,” she is reported to have said.
Combs added that, “I would never allow my own children or grandchildren to read the books or watch the movies, and other parents should do so too.”
The Harry Potter novels have previously come under fire from some religious groups who have claimed that the books promote witchcraft.
Harry Potter author JK Rowling recently announced that she has always considered Albus Dumbledore, head of the fictional Hogwarts wizard school, to be gay.
At the time she commented that some Christian groups did not approve of the novels and that they’d now have another reason to continue to do so.
