As same-sex marriage became a reality in the UK over the weekend, Elton John, 67, and David Furnish, 51, announced their own plans to tie the knot.

Writing for Attitude magazine, Furnish said: “As a high-profile couple, we feel it is our duty to do it, to make sure that everyone knows that this is something that many gay men living in this country never dreamed would happen.”

Hew explained that “Elton and I both think there is a massive difference between calling someone your ‘partner’ and calling them your ‘husband’. Partner’ is such an impersonal word and doesn’t adequately describe the love we have for each other.”

The couple have been together since 1993, and entered into a civil partnership on 21 December 2005. They are raising two boys, Elijah and Zachary, born via a surrogate mother.

“When Zachary and Elijah are grown up and having children of their own, they will – hopefully – be living in a world where everyone can be equal, when being married isn’t about whether you’re straight or gay, but simply about being human,” said Furnish.

In an interview with the Las Vegas Review, Furnish revealed that he and John do not plan to have a big wedding.

“I think what we’ll do is go to a registry office in England in May, and take the boys with us, and a couple of witnesses.”

Legislation legalising same-sex marriage in England and Wales was passed in July last year, but only came into effect on Saturday.
