The Big Queer Election Debate

Advertorial

Still unsure who to vote for in the upcoming elections? Join the Big Queer Election Debate in Tshwane on 17 May, where queer leaders from several political parties will make their pitch to the LGBTIQ+ community.

Hosted by Queer Quantity, it’s a unique opportunity for the queer community to get clarity on where each party stands on LGBTIQ+ equality and what they plan to do to address the challenges facing the community.

Through questioning and meaningful dialogue, the event will highlight the importance of equality, diversity, and respect for all individuals, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

This event will be a platform for the African National Congress, Democratic Alliance, Economic Freedom Fighters, Rise Mzansi, United Democratic Movement, and others, to showcase their commitment to the LGBTIQ+ community.

Panellists will include the ANC’s first lesbian affirming National Executive Committee member, Mmapaseka Steve Letsike, the DA’s youth firebrand, Dikeledi Selowa, the EFF’s transgender activist, Greyson Thela, UDM’s Secretary-General, Yongama Ntsika, Rise Mzansi’s National Leadership Collective member, Faeeza Lok, SA Queer Movement’s President, Calvin Nkosi, and others.

With panellists comprised of queer leaders from each participating political party, the debate aims to scrutinise and evaluate each party’s stance, policies, and actions concerning LGBTQIA+ rights and inclusion.

“The Big Queer Election Debate is not just about politics; it’s about advancing human rights and social justice. It is a call to action for all parties to demonstrate their unwavering dedication to creating a society where every person can live authentically and without fear of discrimination,” says Queer Quantity’s Mpho Buntse.

The event is being held on May 17, which marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, dedicated to raising awareness around issues of discrimination directed towards the LGBTIQ+ community.

The debate will take place at the Tshwane Council Chambers (Sammy Marks Chambers) from 10:00 to 13:00. It will also be live-streamed on social media.

Queer Quantity will launch a report reflecting the preliminary results of its LGBTIQ+ Election Poll at the event.
