The phenomenally successful Conversations urban networking and social giving event for gay and lesbian professionals in Johannesburg and Cape Town today announced that it has become a programme of the Other Foundation.

The Other Foundation is an African trust that gathers support for those who are working to protect and advance the rights, wellbeing and social inclusion of LGBTI people in southern Africa. It gives support to groups through both fundraising and grant making.

Conversations was launched in October 2013 in Cape Town and in November 2014 in Johannesburg for LGBTI professionals.

The monthly events provide a space at upmarket, LGBTI-friendly venues to network professionally and make new friends in a socially responsible way by raising awareness and money for LGBTI and other causes. It has a 4,000 strong online LGBTI community.

“The decision to give a home to Conversations was an easy one because we have shared values and shared interests,” commented Neville Gabriel, CEO of the Other Foundation.

“Andrew Howard has built an impressive platform in Conversations, which will increase its capacity and footprint through this partnership. Not only does it offer new possibilities for the development of LGBTI philanthropy but also innovative approaches to building links between LGBTI communities, activists, businesses, and non-profit organisations,” explained Gabriel.

Howard, the founder of Conversations, said that he was delighted that the success of Conversations in Cape Town and Johannesburg has been recognised.

“Taking Conversations into the Other Foundation is a great privilege. I’m looking forward to using the Conversations network I have built to support the advancement of human rights for LGBTI people throughout southern Africa and to promote LGBTI philanthropy to help fund this work,” he said.

According to Shekeshe Mokgosi, Public Engagement Manager at the Other Foundation, while there will be slight adjustments to Conversations branding, “the model of Conversations events will not change because it has been proven to work well.”
